It’s tough to tell what you’re following at night until you get up close to a Slingshot. Driver’s and riders behind get treated to bright LED tail light strips with a tall center strip running along the machine’s center fin. Roberson PhotographyĮvening creeps in as I head back home after stopping for a quick snack at a country store that also features a robust selection of barbequed treats, and as night falls, the wide array of LED headlights, including a bright center light, illuminates the road ahead. The Polaris Slingshot remains one of the most unusual vehicles on the road. But it’s tough to tell that the electronic nannies are doing anything as operation is highly transparent, making the Slingshot one of few more pure driver’s machines left on the market. There is traction control and it does have an off switch right on the dash, but I prefer to leave it on and let the comprehensive driving dynamics package do its job. Stout 298mm brake discs all around and wide 225/45R18 Kenda tires bring things to a quick stop with a chirp here and there as there is no ABS on the Slingshot. It has little if any body roll and a correspondingly firm ride, so smooth roads are best, and the feedback through the D-shaped steering wheel is excellent. The Slingshot can dial up a full G of lateral force while railing through a sweeper, and I’m happy to test that spec, repeatedly. Roberson PhotographyĮven in the lower-powered SL trim, the lightweight Slingshot is still a thrill to pilot down a twisting road, engine creeping up on its 8,500 rpm redline while the exhaust howls. Find a curvy stretch of road and you've discovered the Slingshot's purpose in life.
